Maui’s Popular Beaches

Every beach in Maui is unique with it’s own type of sand, surf and scenery.  We swam and snorkeled many beaches but always felt more relaxed when a lifeguard was watching over us.  One of our favorite beaches is Big Beach, which is the largest undeveloped beach on Maui equipped with restroom facilities. The golden deep sand is awesome, the surf is very exciting with the waves crashing close to the shore with its power can take your feet from under you quickly.  A local fellow mentioned the best time to go to Big Beach if your not wanting to bake in the sun is from 11am - 2pm as a cloud forms every morning which covers part of Makena area.

WARNING: High surf conditions are frequent during the months OCTOBER TO MAY on North, West and East facing beaches. USE EXTREME CAUTION. Check with lifeguards, check signs, talk to locals before entering the ocean.

Another beach close to Big Beach is Little Beach where clothing is optional. We opted out of this beach because we all know how powerful the Maui sun is. Other beaches in the South Maui area are fantastic we spent lots of time at Wailea Beach which is the beach infront of the Grand Wailea Resort.  Drive to the Grand Wailea Resort in Wailea where they will valet park your car at no charge....yep no charge.  Bring your camera as the hotels architecture, displays and grounds are incredible the restaurants are fabulous.  If you enjoy walking the waterfront takes you past all the big hotels where the scenery is breathtaking.

We spent sometime at Baldwin Beach near Pa’ia where I found myself in trouble in the surf. I went out on a boogie board and was having a great time. I kept going further out diving under the waves it was awesome. Before long I was out way to far and being taken out further.  I’ve never panicked in water but this was close.  I’m a strong swimmer and swam back where the braking waves took me back to shore.  Its important to pay attention and watch your depth.
