The Governor's Mansion This is the second oldest occupied governor's quarters in the United States. It was first occupied in 1842 by Governor Tilghman Tucker and his family, built in Greek Revival style, this was the most popular style of that period. In 1975 the building was appointed a National Historic Landmark. The historic section of the mansion is now open to the public. Manship House Museum This is home to Charles Henry Manship, Civil War mayor of Jackson, and his family. It has been restored as a museum depicting life in Mississippi in the mid-19th century. Built in Gothic Revival cottage style in 1857. Manship was a decorative painter and craftsman and as you will see the interior features his handiwork, all restored or reproduced. Russell C. Davis Planetarium This incredible planetarium is one of the largest in the world, with a extremely large hemispheric wrap around screen that presents Sky Shows on astronomy, astronauts, space exploration and laser light concerts featuring the music of contemporary and classic rock and roll artists. Old Brick House This French Colonial American building overlooks the Back Bay. It was once owned by Jean Baptiste Carquotte, who received a land grant from the Spanish government in 1784. Armed Forces Museums at Camp Shelby The museum honours the service and sacrifices of Mississippi's servicemen and women and those from other parts of the country that trained in Mississippi during times of war. The museum holds over 17,000 artifacts in its collection ranging from military vehicles, weapons and archival materials. State-of-the-art exhibits tell personal stories of the heroes and heroines in hopes to educate future generations. Winterville Mounds This prehistoric ceremonial center was built by a Native American civilization that thrived from about A.D. 1000 to 1450. Around Town Carousels Abound There are over 50 brightly painted, life-sized carousel horse sculptures placed throughout the city and county. Bamboo Emu Farm Visitors are welcome to tour the farm and visit with the animals as well as take a stroll through the hatchery. Tours are available by appointment.
