Although the rumble of the falls can be heard from miles away, there is no preparation for the power of the sight itself, a great arc of hissing and frothing water crashing over the 52m cliff.

Niagara Falls is a welcoming little town that stretches along the Niagara River for about 3 Km. Renowned as a honeymoon destination, the town is well equipped to satisfy the needs of the 14 million people who visit the falls each year. It is divided into three main sections: to the south are the falls themselves, and these are flanked by a thin strip of parkland that stretches out along the river bank as far Clifton Hill, the glitziest street in Ontario, lined with attractions, museums and lots of entertainment. To the west is the main hotel strip Lundy’s lane. To the north, on the Bridge Street, lies the business district with the train and bus stations.

Horseshoe Falls named for their shape, the 800M wide and 50M high Horseshoe Falls are formed by the turbulent waters of the Niagara River roaring over a semi circular cliff to plunge into the bubbling waters below. By these means the Niagara River adjust to the differential between the water levels of Lakes Erie and Ontario, which it connects. The falls remain an awe-inspiring sight, despite the fact that the flow of river is regulated by hydro electric companies, which siphon off a substantial part of the river to drive their turbines.
Maid of the Mist - The best way to appreciate the full force of the falls is to experience the Maid of the Mist boat trip. Boats depart from the jetty at the bottom of of Clifton Hill and then struggle upriver to the crashing waters under the falls. It is an invigorating (if wet) trip. The boat owners do provide raincoats.
Clifton Hill is a short steep street runs up front the Edge of Niagara River Gorge and is lined with a string of fast food restaurants and tourist attractions such as: Guinness Book of World Records, House of Frankenstein and That's incredible and Ripples Believe It or Not! Museum. Great Gorge Adventure - Experience the great force of the Niagara River's torrent is best admired from down at the bottom of the canyon. The Great Gorge gives you a close-up view by means of an elevator and a tunnel, which lead from the top of the gorge to a riverside boardwalk. The whirlpools and rapids here are some of the most spectacular, yet treacherous, in the world. Located: 4330 River Road - Phone: 905-371-0254. Niagara Glen Nature Reserve - This small reserve lies 7 km down river from the falls. This segment of the gorge has been preserved in pristine condition, with bushes and low trees tumbling down the rocky cliffside. Seven different hiking trails lead past boulders, caves and wild flowers. The walks are easy on the way down but a steep climb on the way up. Located: 3040 River Road - Phone: 905-371-0254 Whirlpool Rapids is where the Niagara River makes a dramatically sharp turn about 4.5 km downstream for the falls, generating a vicious raging whirlpool, on of the most lethal stretches of water in the whole of North America. The effect is created when the river pushes against the north west of the canyon, only to be forced to turn around in the opposite direction. The most stunning view of the whirlpool rapids is from the Spanish Aero Car, a specially designed, brightly coloured cable car that crosses the Gorge high above the river. Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory Located 9 km's downstream from the falls and comprise over 40 hectares of beautifully maintained gardens divided into several different zones. One of the areas is their rose garden, which displays over 2,000 different varieties. The gardens also include an arboretum that has examples of many different types of trees from beech and mulberry to magnolia and yew. The Butterfly Conservatory is even more popular. At the beginning of the visit, a video is shown in the theater explaining the life cycle of the butterflies. The butterflies are held in a huge heated dome that holds several thousand - one of the largest in the world.
