Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine This once served as a working coal mine. It closed in 1910. In 1960 the mine was re-opened as a tourist attraction. You're seated in mine cars and driven in what is essentially a big loop under a hillside, with plenty of stops so that your ex-coal miner guide can point out displays in the murky darkness and fill your head with mine arcana. Midland Trail (Scenic Highway 60), Charleston One of the oldest and one of the most scenic routes in the United States the Midland Trail, offers a wonderful 119-mile journey across south central West Virginia. Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum is the largest and most popular coal heritage destination in the region. Located in the New River Park near downtown Beckley. This entertaining and educational attraction takes visitors under ground for a guided tour of an actual coal mine. The park has several restored buildings from the mining era.
